The Tata Safari Storme is the latest incarnation of the legendary Safari range that has been around for a better part of one-and-a-half decades. Unveiled at 2012 Auto Expo the SUV is expected to revive its sales and compete with the current segment leader the Mahindra XUV 500. The new car has been under development for over two years and finally our sources confirm that the new SUV will be launched very soon – October 2012. his car has been in development for the past two years and has seen two facelifts and four engines. It will be the refurbished version of the Tata Safari; it will be known as Safari Storme. However, it is expected that this car will be sold alongside the original variant and will bridge the gap between Safari and Aria. The Safari Storme, like the current model should come in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive guises, with the latter being fitted with a Borg Warner, shift-on-the-fly system. With a wider track at the front and double wishbones instead of a torsion beam, the Safari Storme should handle better than before.

On the inside,

On the inside, quality levels have been upped to quite an extent, with better plastic trim, more plush fittings and panel gaps with smaller tolerances. The Safari Storme continues to remain a seven-seater, with jump seats at the rear, though the spare wheel is now placed under the rear tail gate instead of on it.

The engine of the upcoming Tata Safari Storme will be same 2.2 L DiCOR diesel engine used in the original Safari. It is reported that the manufacturer was also experimenting with a 3.0 L diesel engine, though it did not deliver satisfactory results. A V6 petrol engine was also being tested for this car, though it won’t be installed when it launches next year. The engine should easily deliver a power of 140 bhp at 4000 rpm and a torque of 320 Nm at 1700 rpm, just like its sibling. The current Safari retails between Rs 8.28 lakh and Rs 13.26 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) depending on the variant but Tata will have to do better to ensure the new model stays competitive enough among the likes of Mahindra Scorpio, Renault Duster and the Chevrolet Tavera, and, of course, make the wait worthwhile for all those looking forward to the SUV.
