27-Sept-2011 : Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), today has given a name to its upcoming and much awaited SUV, project code named W201, as Mahindra XUV 500. The last ‘500’ in the name is pronounced as ‘5 double ‘O’ (alphabet). The new SUV by Mahindra has been designed in-house and it is developed on the first global SUV platform that could be used for developing more SUVs. As per reports the Mahindra XUV 500 price in India will be between Rs 14 lakh to Rs 15 lakh. The Mahindra XUV 500 is expected to be launched on September 28.

Mahindra XUV 500 Description :

Homegrown automaker Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. is about to add a new car to its already hit fleet of Sports Utility Vehicles in India. Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, the automotive division of the US $12.5 billion Mahindra Group is said to have carried out extensive research across the globe before arriving at the design of the Mahindra SUV in India.

Mahindra XUV 500 has received its name recently and was earlier codenamed as Mahindra W201. The two ‘o’ after the name connotes the activeness or an energetic personality and signifies the agility and quickness of the SUV. The new SUV by Mahindra is said to have been chiseled out in shape after massive survey that covered respondents from the western markets, India and South Africa. The new SUV has undergone rigorous testing and validation in some European, Australian and South African countries. It is under development as an SUV between Mahindra Scorpio and high end premium SUVs available in India.

The other qualities of Mahindra XUV 500 are; contemporary design, exterior style and sophisticated technologies that find a comfortable and apt place in this new SUV. Mahindra engineers at the Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai have developed it in-house in India and put in the best in class manufacturing standards in its production. With the XUV 500 in, Mahindra will be able to embark on giving an Indian SUV option to the world.

The Mahindra XUV 500 has been developed on a monocoque design on which aircrafts are generally designed. The monocoque design is different from the traditional design in which there is a frame which is then covered with lightweight metal sheets. The monocoque design is also called as single shell design.

Mahindra XUV 500 also debuts the first transverse engine from Mahindra. Factors that make this SUV to keep abreast with global standards are its design and development that strictly offer global quality, testing norms and the new SUV complies with global norms, safety regulations and emission standards. Once in, the Mahindra XUV 500 will create a new segment between Mahindra Scorpio and the premium SUVs in India.

The Mahindra XUV 500 will be a 2179cc engine car that will be powered by the mHawk engine of Mahindra Scorpio. Besides the engine, the Mahindra XUV 500 derives nothing from its predecessor Mahindra Scorpio. The XUV 500 will be able to churn out a maximum power of 120 Bhp and a maximum torque of 290 Nm. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. It is also expected to arrive in 6 speed automatic transmission option as well.

Mahindra XUV 500 2WD This will be the 2179cc mHawk engine powered car. It will be the two wheel drive version.
Mahindra XUV 500 4WD It will also be powered by the same 2179cc engine with a four wheel drive.

Mahindra XUV 500 Mileage, Average and Fuel Economy

As it will be powered by the same mHawk engine as that of Mahindra Scorpio, Mahindra XUV 500 will be frugal. As per information available, so Mahindra XUV 500 Mileage is expected to deliver of 12kmpl in the city and 14 kmpl on the highways.

Power of Mahindra XUV 500

A 2179cc mHawk diesel engine that currently powers Mahindra Scorpio will power the Mahindra XUV 500. The CRDi engine is capable of producing 120 Bhp of maximum power and a maximum torque of 290 Nm. The XUV 500 will be a 6-speed manual transmission car but it is expected that it will also be available in 6-speed automatic transmission option as well in order to compete with the premium SUVs.

Mahindra XUV 500 Exteriors

The Exteriors of the Mahindra XUV 500 will not inherit anything from the current Mahindra SUV lineup. The front looks of the new Mahindra SUV will be huge and a Mahindra badge houses at the centre of the front grille. It will also have daytime LED lights besides a Xenon headlamps and fog lights with clear view. Spy shots of the Mahindra XUV 500 suggest that it will throw rugged looks with macho looking huge wheel arches. The XUV 500 will run on a 17 inch alloy wheels. It is also expected that the like the Mahindra Xylo, the Mahindra XUV 500 will not have the rear spare wheel hanging at the rear but it will be positioned under the body.


Mahindra XUV 500 Interior Appearance & Comfort

The Interior Apperance of Mahindra XUV 500 is expected to be in the premium SUV segment and is assumed to take on advanced SUV features besides comfort features of a sedan. The normal features such as power steering, power windows, dual-zone climate control system, in addition to the integrated music system. Aux, USB and Bluetooth connectivity is also expected to be available on the Mahindra SUV. The driver seat will be electronically adjustable in addition to retractable ORVM’s. As per reports, it is inferred that the XUV500 will also be fitted with a global positioning system to keep track of the locations.

Engine Capacity & Performance of Mahindra XUV 500

The Mahindra XUV 500 engine will be a 2179cc mHawk engine that is also the power machine for the Mahindra Scorpio. The engine produces 120 Bhp of maximum power sufficient enough to power the mighty machine. The engine is capable of producing 290 Nm of maximum torque. In order to translate the power delivered by the engine to the wheels, the XUV 500 is expected to have a 6-speed manual transmission. It is also expected that the XUV 500 will also come with a 6-speed automatic transmission option as well.

The Mahindra XUV 500 Wheels is expected to have 17 inch all-alloy wheels.

Braking & Handling of Mahindra XUV 500

If there is 120 bhp power under the hood, it is sure that the Mahindra XUV 500 will have a robust braking system in place. As per initial information, this Mahindra SUV will have both front and rear disc brakes. There will be ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) and EBS (Electronic Brake Distribution) in place to avoid locking in times of panic braking. Also, there will be an Electronic Stability Program in place to keep the big SUV under control irrespective of any terrain. Besides this the Mahindra XUV 500 will also be equipped with reverse parking sensors, reverse guide system to take care of the slim parking spaces available in the cities. In order to match it with global brands Mahindra could also think of fixing a cruise control and traction control on the Mahindra XUV 500.
